Main Objectives

This applied course is aimed at formation of students’ communicative competence in negotiations and public speaking in the Russian and English languages.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course students will

  • master the norms and rules of speech behavior of the expert in negotiations in Russian and English-speaking cultures;
  • master the skills of correct, logical, expressive, rich and relevant speech in the Russian and English languages;
  • work on creating effective, persuasive statements in the Russian and English languages;
  • master the main public speech professional genres;
  • master the ability to solve communicative and speech problems in a particular situation of communication in the Russian and English languages;
  • master the analysis and creation of professionally-significant types of statements in the Russian and English languages.

Prerequisites

To be enrolled in the course the student is

to know:

• the fundamentals of theories of communication, text, cross-cultural and business communication;

• phonetics and grammatical structure of the Russian and English languages as well as Business Russian and English vocabulary;

• basic facts of history, culture, geography and political system of Russia, the UK and the USA; 

to be able to:

• apply the knowledge in situations of the direct and mediated cross-cultural communication in Russian and English;

• cooperate with colleagues and work in team; 

• make organizational and administrative decisions in non-standard situations and bear responsibility for them;

• work with information in global computer networks;

to have a good command of:

• the Russian and English languages, their literary form and stylistic variety;

• methods and techniques of various types of oral communication;

in Russian and English; speaking (which is to speak correctly, fluently, with proper rhythm, stress and intonation);

• culture of thinking (which is to be able to perceive, analyze, generalize and synthesize information, to set goals and choose the ways to achieve them);

• information receiving, storage, processing as wells computer skills.

Teaching methods

Simulation allows working with actual samples of business correspondence;

stimulating texts in Russian and English serves to shape a complex idea of types of texts and translation/interpretation tools;

business and role playing games are aimed at simulating real professional communication;

discussing situations of professional communication forms the skills of analysis and self-awareness;

computer technologies are aimed at developing skills for on-line searching;

discussions serve as the foundation for a task-oriented and regulated exchange of opinions concerning the issue in question followed by a coordinated decision.

The student earns the credits for the course provided that s/he hands in all the assignments during the semester and makes final test tasks.
