The course "The Quaternary continental deposits" is a component of the basic (general-professional) part of the professional cycle M.2 curriculum masters’ training towards training direction Geology. For the successful accomplishment of the discipline, students should know the characteristics of modern exogenous processes, geomorphology, have an idea of facial-genetic types of sedimentary rocks, the general principles and methods of stratigraphy.
The purpose of the development of the discipline "The Quaternary continental deposits" is to provide students an idea of the uniqueness of the Quaternary period, as the last segment of geologic time during which under the influence of various geological processes shaped the modern topography, climate and biota.
The objectives of the discipline "The Quaternary deposits continental" is to familiarize students with the main processes that have occurred over the past 2.6 million Years; genetic types of Quaternary deposits and features of the depositional processes of the relief role of external and internal dynamics; with the methods of stratigraphic subdivision of the Quaternary sediments and stratigraphic schemes; with the main distinctive features of the geological structure and formation of Quaternary sediments of the Northern Hemisphere continents (North America, the boreal Asia, Eastern and Western Europe, and Africa). During the workshops, students are introduced with the maps of Quaternary deposits, specific cuts, paleogeographic maps of different areas, stratigraphic schemes, collections residues Quaternary mammals.
Competences of students formed as a result of the familiarization of the course "The Quaternary continental deposits"
Know:
- common processes and events that took place in the last 2.6 million years of Earth's history;
- methods for the study and mapping of Quaternary deposits;
- an understanding of the principles and methods of stratigraphic subdivision of the Quaternary deposits;
- general stratigraphic units of the quaternary system;
- The main features of the geological structure and formation of Quaternary sediments of the Northern Hemisphere continents (North America, the boreal Asia, Eastern and Western Europe, and Africa).
- independently set specific objectives of research in the field of Quaternary Geology, using the latest domestic and foreign data (periodicals, databases and Internet sites);
- Use in-depth specialized theoretical knowledge, practical skills for research and production of geological and stratigraphic work (to determine the type and origin of continental deposits, Quaternary sections describe and build his scheme; read and properly execute the map of Quaternary sediments);
- analyze and interpret the data field and laboratory studies to solve scientific and practical tasks;
- professionally create and execute a research report or article, including information on the Quaternary.
Professor
Shpansky Andrei Valerievich – Candidate of geological and mineralogical sciences, associate professor, Chair of Paleontology and Historical Geology
The overall complexity of the course is 3 ECTS, 108 hours.

In the educational process lectures, which are informative in nature and imaging and account for 30% of classroom teaching. In practical classes and independent work using active and interactive forms (analysis of specific situations, the discussion of individual sections of the discipline, individual assignments). In conjunction with this extracurricular work contributes to the formation and development of professional skills of students.
