Main Objectives
The course is designed to show the ways the modern English lexicon is structered and stored. It also puts insight into meaning and concept relation, the vocabularies of world Englishes, stylistical analysis of words, sociolinguistic and historical accounts of lexical change, particularly with reference to dialects. Within the course the main building patterns of the words coinage, issues of dictionary making industry and enlargement of learners‘ vocabularies are discussed.

Formation of competence:
а) intercultural:
- the ability to develop cultural and professional competence independently and to master new methods of linguistic research;
- the ability to get and use new knowledge independently.
b) professional:
- the ability to operate basic terms and concepts in the analysis of vocabulary;
- the ability to deal with words and their contextual meaning and usage, word clusters development and semantic change of words;
- ability to conduct research of different lexical items and sets with reference to different lexical, syntactic and stylistic behaviour.

Assessment requirements |
Student’s skills and knowledge are assessed at the lectures, written tests and final examination. |

Assessment criteria |
The assessment of students‘ works is carried out by the following criteria: – compliance of the contents to the subject; – logically structured answers to the questions; – coherence and cohesion; – work is handed over in time. |
||||||
The composition of final accumulative mark |
Final mark consists of: 2 tests –15 % each, individual assignment – 20 %, group case analysis and presentation – 20 %, exam – 30 %. |
